Founded
by Robin Gans and Sandy Sachs in November 1990, GIRL BAR is the
largest dance and entertainment club for lesbians in the United
States.
After moving to LA from New York in the late 80’s, Sachs and
Gans recognized the need for an upscale nightclub catering to
the lesbian community. In response to that demand, they launched
a weekly event unlike anything else that had been done before.
The concept was simple: to provide the most exciting events, in
the most elegant of settings with the hottest women in town.
Today, their vision continues to grow and set a standard for
excellence in the lesbian and gay community.
“We wanted to do something to help make the lesbian community
more visible and create a place for women to come together,”
said Girl Bar co-founder, Sandy Sachs.
“Girl Bar is a place where our patrons can come and feel safe,
feel comfortable – and most of all - feel empowered,” adds
co-founder Dr. Robin Gans.
For nearly two decades, Girl Bar has built a worldwide
reputation for featuring incredible special events, hot music
and the sexiest clientele. On Friday nights in Los Angeles, it
is THE place for women to be!
Along with Girl Bar’s success, Sachs and Gans have gained
national notoriety. Dubbed “The Poster Children for Lipstick
Lesbians,” they’ve appeared on such shows as Maury Povich, Jenny
Jones and Montel Williams. They’ve also been featured in such
national mainstream publications as USA TODAY, TIME, SPORTS
ILLUSTRATED, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES and THE NEW YORK TIMES, and
such International publications as MARIE CLAIRE, PARIS.
In addition to Girl Bar, Gans and Sachs are producers of the "Girl
Bar Dinah Shore Weekend." This yearly event takes
place in Palm Springs, California the last weekend in March and
is now heralded as the largest lesbian event in the world.
By popular demand, Sachs and Gans have also held special
out-of-town editions of Girl Bar in San Diego and other cities
in Southern California. They’ve also brought the Girl Bar
experience online, with
GirlBarMatch.com – the hottest
dating service designed solely for gay, lesbian and bisexual
women.
2004 marked the launch of Girl Bar-Las Vegas, happening every
Saturday at Krave Nightclub, located on the world-famous Las
Vegas Strip. Opening night drew rave reviews and with its
on-going popularity, Sachs and Gans now plan to launch weekly
Girl Bar nights in Phoenix, with more cities on the way.
In the spring of 2005, Sachs and Gans were honored at the L.A.
Gay & Lesbian Center’s annual Women’s Night gala and received
its prestigious “Board of Directors” award. In addition, Sachs
and Gans have been named “2005 Women of the Year” by Christopher
Street West and will ride in L.A.’s Gay Pride Parade this June.
As if they don’t have anything else to do, Sachs also is a DJ
spinning every Friday and Saturday night at Girl Bar and at such
prestigious events as Gay & Lesbian Elder Housings “Garden
Party”, movie premiers including “HOUSE OF WAX”, and the most
recent “BATMAN BEGINS”. Sachs is also co-owner of one of L.A.’s
top fitness centers, The FITNESS FACTORY named one of L.A.’s top
ten gyms by LOS ANGELES MAGAZINE.
Dr. Gans has a fulltime practice in Beverly Hills as a licensed
clinical psychologist, specializing in issues that affect the
Lesbian & Gay community.
Girl Bar celebrates its 15th anniversary in November of 2005 and
is still growing in numbers. Upholding its commitment to
excellence, it continues to be the #1 place for women to meet,
dance, play and feel proud.
